Coral is one of the ancient gem materials. It is an organic gem, calcium carbonate and a trace of carotene. Coral grows in branches that look like underwater trees.
Romans had a strong believe that coral protected children from harm and it cured wounds made by snakes and scorpions. It also diagnosed diseases by changing color.
Precious coral's relative density is 3.86 and its hardness is 3.5 on the Mohs scale. Due to corals nature of being soft and opacity, it is usually cut en cabocohn, or used to make beeds.
