Pearl is a hard and rounded
object produced by mollusks like pearl oysters. The unique luster of
this gemstone depends on the reflection and refraction of light from
the translucent layers. It is generally white but sometimes creamy
or pinkish tinge. It may also be tinted with yellow, green, blue,
brown, purple or black.
Nature pearls are 100% nacre i.e. pearl substance secreted by the
oyster. Imitation pearls can be distinguished from the natural one
by X-ray examination.
The value of natural pearl is same as other precious gems and it
depends on size, shape and quality. Black pearls are highly valued
because of their rarity.
