For making Cricket world cup more
interesting ICC divided qualified teams into groups. For Cricket
World Cup 2007 only 16 International cricket teams were qualified
which are divided into four Groups on the basis of their performance
in last matches. ICC scheduled all the matches among these teams
according to their Groups. In World Cup 2007, all 16 participating
teams performed under following groups:
Group A
South Africa
Also known as The Proteas, South African cricket team was
established by the British, and the first tour by a side from
England took place in 1888-89. ICC voted to suspend the team from
international cricket indefinitely in 1970 because of its
government's policy of apartheid, a policy which led them to play
only against the white nations (England, Australia, New Zealand),
and field only white players. However it was reinstated in 1991 and
the country hosted the ICC Cricket World Cup in 2003. In World Cup
2007, Graeme Smith leaded the team.
Australia
Australian cricket team is the national cricket team of the
Commonwealth of Australia and is the oldest team in Test cricket. It
played the first test match in 1877 against England, winning by 45
runs. Ricky Ponting headed the Australian cricket team in ICC WC
2007 in the Caribbeans.
Scotland
Scottish cricket team represents Scotland. The team was elected as
associate membership of the ICC in 1994. Craig Wright was the
captain of the team in World Cup 2007.
The Netherlands
Dutch cricket team is the national cricket team of the Netherlands.
The team is administered by the Koninklijke Nederlandse Cricket
Bond. Royal Dutch Cricket Association was formed in 1883 and the
Netherlands achieved Associate Membership of the International
Cricket Council in 1966. In this World Cup Luuk van Troost is
leading the team as captain.
Group B
India
The Indian cricket team is governed by the Board of Control for
Cricket (BCCI) in India. In terms of sponsor, Team India is the
highest paid sports team in the world. In 1932, the Indian cricket
team became the 6th Teast playing team. The odyssey of cricket in
India started in the early 1700s by the British. The most memorable
day of the team was the winning of World Cup in 1983 under the
shelter of Kapil Dev, the then captain. Rahul Dravid, leaded the
team in the ICC World Cup 2007 in West Indies.
Sri Lanka
The Sri Lankan cricket team is administered by Sri Lanka Cricket.
It first played an international cricket in 1975. The team received
Test status in 1981 and became the 8th Test nation. The Lankan won
the World Cup 1996. Mahela Jayawardene leaded the team as captain in
the World Cup 2007.
Bangladesh
The Bangladesh cricket team is administered by the Bangladesh
Cricket Board. It attained the status of Test match in the year 2000
and became the 10th Test nation. Habibul Bashar headed the team in
the World Cup 2007 as captain.
Bermuda
The Bermudian cricket team is governed by the Bermuda Cricket
Board. The cricket board was elected to Associate Membership of the
ICC in 1966. Irving Romaine, the captain of the team, leaded
Bermudian cricket team in the Caribbeans World Cup 2007.
Group C
England
England is the founder of Test cricket as well as One-day
International cricket. The Twenty20 match has also evolved in
England. The England cricket team operates under the England and
Wales Cricket Board (ECB). Michael Vaughan, captain of the team
leaded the boys in the World Cup 2007 being hosted by West Indies.
New Zeland
The New Zealand team is also nicknamed as the Black Caps. The team
played for the first time in 1929-30 against England and became the
fifth Test nation. The first ODI was played by New Zealand in
1972-73 against Pakistan. Stephen Fleming leaded the team in the ICC
World Cup 2007.
Kenya
The Kenyan cricket team was granted the status of Test nation in
the year 2003. The nation played its first-class game in 1986
against Pakistan B. Steve Tikolo leaded the team to the World Cup
2007.
Canada
Cricket was introduced in Canada by the British after the Battle of
the Plains of Abraham in 1759. In 2000, Canada hosted the first ICC
Americas Championship. John Davison is the captain of the team and
leaded his boys to the World Cup 2007 in the Caribbeans.
Group D
Pakistan
The Pakistani cricket team is administered by the Pakistan Cricket
Board. It is the full member of the ICC with Test and one-day
international status. According to the world ranking dated 5 January
2007, Pakistan is ranked 3rd in the ICC Test Championship and 4th in
the ICC ODI Championship. Pakistan won the World Cup in the year
1992 beating England in Australia. Inzamam-ul-Haq leaded the team to
the World Cup 2007.
Zimbabwe
The Zimbabwean cricket team is administrated by Zimbabwe Cricket
(formerly known as the Zimbabwe Cricket Union or ZCU). The team is a
full member of the ICC with Test and one-day international status.
Team Zimbabwe played its first Test match in the year 1992. Prosper
Utseya headed the team in the World Cup 2007.
West Indies
Also known as The Windies, the West Indian cricket team is a
multi-national cricket team representing a sporting confederation of
a dozen English-speaking Caribbean countries and British
dependencies. The nation has won two consecutive World Cups, 1975
and 1979. Brian (Charles) Lara, The Prince of Port-of-Spain and one
of the greatest batsmen ever, leaded the team to the World Cup 2007
in the Caribbeans.
Ireland
The Ireland cricket team represents both political entities on the
island of Ireland - the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland.
The team has qualified for the first time in this World Cup. Trent
Johnston was the captain of Ireland cricket team for the ICC World
Cup 2007.
