Rail Budget 2007-08


Railway Minister Shri Lalu Prasad Yadav introduced the Railway Budget 2007-08 on 26th February 2007.

TRAIN FARES
  • Fares reduced by 2-8 per cent across air-conditioned and other sleeper classes
  • Surcharge on superfast trains reduced by 20 per cent
  • Re 1 cut in the daily ticket of non-suburban ordinary passenger and non-superfast mail express trains
  • e-ticket charges reduced
  • Concessional tickets for those taking civil service and other government exams

FREIGHT RATES
  • Freight for diesel, petrol, ammonia and the like reduced by 5 per cent.
  • Fright on transportation of minerals like iron ore and limestone reduced by 6 per cent.
  • Discount on loading empty trains hiked to 30 per cent from 20 per cent, and facility extended to all commodities except coal, coke and iron ore.

RAIL BUDGET TIT-BITS
  • Rail tickets to be available at petrol pumps & ATMs.
  • 6000 automatic ticket vending machines will be introduced.
  • 2nd class unreserved coach number will be increased from 4 to 6.
  • Rs 5000cr will be invested in Mumbai Urban Trans Plan.
  • 8,000 vacant posts in Railway Protection Special Force will be filled up shortly on an all India basis.
  • The target for construction of new lines in 2007-08 has been fixed at 500 kilometres. The sections include:
    • Puntamba-Shirdi
    • Mahoba-Khajuraho
    • Qazigund-Kakapore and Budgam-Baramulla
    • Jaggyapet-Malachervu
    • Kottur-Harpanhalli
  • During 2007-08, a target of completion of about 1,800 km of following gauge conversion works has been fixed:

  • Last year passenger and freight rates were left broadly unchanged.
  • According to data, Indian Railways runs over 14,000 passenger and freight trains and carries 15 million people every day -- it is more than the population of Sweden and Norway combined.
  • "I have tried to address the interests of all sections of people. But if there are any shortcomings, people should tell me, I will try to remove them in future," Mr. Yadav said yesterday.
  • On the eve (Sunday) of the Rail Budget 2007, Lalu Prasad assured that people can expect a "good Railway Budget."
  • Rail Budget 2007-08 will be Lalu Prasad Yadav’s fourth consecutive Railway Budget.
  • Railway Budget 2007-08 will be presented by Railway Minister Sri Laloo Prasad Yadav in the Parliament on 26-Feb-07 from 12 PM IST onwards.
