This is the first World Cup finals for the Czech Republic. As Chechoslovakia, the country participated in 8 world cups. The country finished as loosing finalists in 1934 against Italy and in 1962 against Brazil.
In the preliminaries, the Czech Republic narrowly missed out on instant entry to the world cup by few points, beaten to the top spot by the Netherlands. The team then faced Norway in the play-offs to decide who takes a place in the finals. After a nail biting game, Czech managed to win their play-off 1-0 and gained entry into the finals.
Their largest win was against Andorra in 2005 by 8-1 and the worst defeat against Switzerland (3-0).
