1966, the year England took home the world
cup title beating West Germany. Bobby Moore the then captain of the
team led the England to victory. Goals from Martin Peters and Geoff
Hurst set the great British saying "They think it's all over...
It is now." This FIFA World Cup 2006 tournament marks four
decades since England won it's only World Cup.
England had made eleven FIFA World Cup final appearances. Their
debut was in Brazil in 1950. In 1990 they reached the semi-finals
and they lost on penalties to West Germany. In 2002 they lost
quarter-finalists for the fifth time, going down 2-1 to Brazil
having taken the lead through a Michael Owen goal.
England will be playing in Group B along with Sweden, Paraguay,
Trinidad and Tobago. The key players on which the team will be
banking are Wayne Rooney, striker Owen and the midfield trio of
David Beckham, Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard.
