The Mexican team has participated in the World Cup 13 times. They are nicknamed 'The Tricolores' or 'El Tri.' In the 1990s, they dominated the CONCACAF sides and hence were called 'the Giants of CONCACAF.'
The team reached the quarter-finals in 1970 and 1986 and on both occasions lost to the eventual runners-up. In 1970, Italy defeated them by 4-1 and in 1986, the home team were devastated after losing the penalty shoot-out with Germany. The team quite easily qualified for the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa.
