Until 2003, Serbia & Montenegro played
as Yugoslavia. They reached the semi-finals of the first ever FIFA
World Cup in 1930. An early lead faded into memory as the eventual
champions Uruguay defeated them by 6-1.
In 1950, the team was eliminated in the group round despite two
wins. In 1958 they reached the quarter-finals, where they lost 1-0
to Germany. They took revenge on Germany in 1962 with a 1-0 defeat,
but the Czechs defeated them in the semi-final.
In 1974 world cup, Yugoslavia crashed out of the second round, in
1990 they exited in the quarter-finals. In 1998 the team found their
match in the last sixteen when Holland defeated them 2-1.
Serbia & Montenegro will be playing in Group C along with
Argentina, Netherlands, Cote d'Ivoire.
