Sweden have reached the FIFA World Cup
finals 10 times. They were honored with runners-up in 1958 on home
soil, after dismissing the defending champions Germany in the
semi-final. In final, their opponent proved superior as Brazil
defeated the Scandinavian home side 5-2.
20 years earlier in 1938, the team claimed fourth place in the FIFA
World Cup. After their success in 1958, Sweden failed to qualify for
the next two tournaments. In 1970 their campaign ended in the 1st
round and in 1974 they went one round further. In 1978 they returned
home without a win.
Swedish football was once again ignited in the 1990s, culminating in
third place in the 1994 FIFA World Cup.
In Germany they will be playing in Group B along with England,
Paraguay, Trinidad and Tobago. The key players are Captain Olof
Mellberg, Ljungberg, Larrson, Ibrahimovic and Christian Wilhelmsson.
