Switzerland have qualified for 7 FIFA World
Cup finals. In their début appearance in 1934 they lost a
close quarter-final 3-2 to Czechoslovakia. 4 years later, the team
reached the quarter-final by defeating Germany by 4-2.
At 1950 FIFA World Cup Brazil, the Swiss team went out in the first
round, but in the 1954 World Cup they played their way into the
quarter-finals as the tournament hosts. After leading 3-0, they
allowed Austria to fight back to claim a 7-5 victory and semi-final
spot.
In 1962 world cup and 1966 world cup Switzerland failed to progress
beyond the first round. In 1994 they headed home after a 3-0 loss to
Spain in the second round.
In FIFA World Cup 2006 they will be playing in Group G along with
France, South Korea, Togo. The key players are Veteran keeper Pascal
Zuberbuehler, midfielders Raphael Wicky, Tranquillo Barnetta and
defender Philippe Senderos.
