The 7 times participant, USA in recent years have emerged as a force to be reckoned with, qualifying for the last four FIFA World Cup finals. The Americans reached the quarter-finals at 2002 FIFA World Cup Korea/Japan, losing narrowly to the eventual runners-up Germany.

The team reached the semi-finals of the first FIFA World Cup in 1930, although only 13 teams took part. Argentina defeated America by 6-1.

In 1948, America suffered their worst defeat by loosing with 11-0 to Norway in Oslo. Their best result came in 1993 when they beat the Cayman Islands by 8-1.

In Germany they will be playing in Group E with Italy, Czech Republic, Ghana.
