Religion: Hindu. Only a small number follow Christianity.
Language: Magahi or Magadhi (closely related to Bhojpuri and
Maithili). An earlier form of Magadhi, known as Magadhi Prakrit is
said to be the language spoken by Gautam Buddha, and the language of
the ancient kingdom of Magadha.

Traditional Occupation: Agriculture
Population: 13 million approximately
Food Habits: Mostly vegetarian but some are also fond of
non-vegetarian food.
Marriage Preference: Prefer marriage in their own community
but are now open to matrimonial alliances outside Magahi community..
About Magahi People:
Magahi people dominate the Magadh area of Bihar state. This includes
Patna, Gaya, Aurangabad, Jehanabad, Nalanda and other surrounding
districts. Magahi people can also be found in some areas of
Hazaribagh, Giridih, Palamau, Munger and Bhagalpur and a small
number in the Malda District of West Bengal. |
