The Formula 1 world championship is monitored by a motor racing body located in France. The commercial rights to F1 are held by International Automobile Federation or FIA. Formula 1 racing cars perform the perfect lap on winding circuits and it is a pleasure to watch the cars race through. Cars seldom pass each other and when they do the crowd goes ecstatic. Formula 1 is considered to be the esteemed motor sport event in the world.
History of Formula 1 Race
Formula 1 was initially known as Formula A and it was first defined in 1946 by the Commission Sportive Internationale (CSI) of the FSI.
Initially F1 was dependent on pre war regulations where the capacity of the engine determined whether it would be banned or not. However the first race with the new regulations was the 1946 Turin Grand Prix won by Achille Varzi in a Alfa Romeo 158 Alfetta.
Alfa Romeo a state owned company decided towards the end of 1951 to withdraw as the Italian government refused to fund the expensive design of a new car.
After 1953 there has always been at least one race held outside Europe. The Formula 1 regulation for 1954 was based on 2.5 litres atmospheric engines.
With this the Lancia and Mercedes-Benz entered the race with the driver Fangio winning the next two seasons. By the end of 1955 Mercedes vanished when one of its sports cars crashed killing 83 people. Mercedes did not return to Formula 1 for 40 years.
Although the basic rules remained the races were shortened by 500 kms/300 miles to 300 kms/200 miles. In 1961 the Formula One was downgraded to 1.5 litre engines to curtail high speed with highly sophisticated Ferrari car(technology borrowed from Lancia) dominance in this race.
Aerodynamic down force in car design gained importance in 1970 and Bernie Ecclestone is credited for managing and transforming Formula One sport into a billion dollar business.
Today Mercedes, Renault and Ferrari are the only car manufacturers and this has paved the way for teams representing their country with funding from their respective national governments.
RULES OF THE GAME
Under the new regulations drivers can adjust the rear wing from their cockpit altering its angle of incidence through a set range to boost overtaking.
The aerodynamic characteristic of the car cannot be tampered by the driver and double diffusers are totally banned stopping driver movement.
Kinetic Energy Recovery Systems (KERS) have been reintroduced in 2011 which takes the waste energy generated under braking and turns it to additional power.
The minimum car weight has been increased by 20kgs to 640kgs indicating that drivers do not pay penalty they once did in KERS equipped cars.
If the driver fails to use specification of the 11 sets of dry weather tyres for the races their time would be 30 seconds per race and wold get excluded from the results.
Gear boxes need to last five race weekends as part of the sports cost saving and environmental initiative.
Stewards now can impose penalties on time, exclude drivers from race results and suspend them from subsequent events.
Formula One track
Throughout history various forms of race tracks have been used in Formula One like the purpose built race tracks as Susuka, road tracks like Spa and the city street tracks such as Monaco.
The longest circuit was the Pescara circuit (25 km) and the most famous is the Nurburgring (22 km) which hosted the German Grand Prix from 1951 to 1976.
Circuits run in clockwise direction and have a starting grid and a pit lane for drivers to break for fuel, tyres and minor repairs.
Circuit design has become sophisticated to meet the safety standards of modern Formula One races.
A Formula One Grand Prix will be held in India for the first time in 2011 and Tilke is designing the Indian circuit.
