Nagarjunakonda Travel Guide
Nagarjunakonda is located on the River Krishna, 65 km from Vijayawada in the state of Andhra Pradesh. Nagarjunakonda was one of the greatest center of Buddhist learning. The stupas here have dainty sculptures depicting scenes from the Buddha's life. The main stupa is called the Mahachaitya and contains the sacred relies of the Buddha, namely, a small tooth and an earring. Nagarjunakonda was discovered in 1926. The great Buddhist scholar, Nagarjuna, founded the University here. On the tour of this ancient city, you will come across the remains of stupas, viharas, chaityas and mandapas along with white marble carvings and sculptures depicting the life of the Buddha. Air : Hyderabad Airport Is The Nearest. Rail : Macherla is the nearest railhead, 29 km from Nagarjuna Sagar Tourist Attractions: Anupu : Located 8 Kms. away from the Nagarjunasagar dam, Anupu is a site of Buddhist excavations reconstructed to perfection with painstaking effort. Several brick structures such as Amphitheater, Maha Vihara, Asthabhuja Swamy Temple, Sarvadeva Temple & Hariti Temple were reconstructed. Ethopia Waterfall: 11 kms downstream, from the Nagarjuna Sagar Dam are the Ethipothala waterfalls, a mountain stream cascading down the hills from a height of 22 meters, the Ethipothala waterfalls are a radiant sight of the power and beauty of nature. The dazzling, azure lagoon formed at the foot of the falls houses a first-rate crocodile breeding center which is open to the public. The 'Chandravanka' stream here plunges from a height of 21.3 metres into a lagoon and flows on through a green valley much frequented by tourists. Nagarjunakonda : Remnants of a rich bygone era, unearthed from the excavations carried out by archeologists at Nagarjunasagar, have been preserved in a museum on a beautiful island hill called Nagarjuna Konda. Nagarjunasagar : Nagarjuna Sagar, an erstwhile prominent Buddhist center, is the most attractive tourist spot in Andhra Pradesh. Named after the Buddhist monk, Acharya Nagarjuna, it is today the major hydel power station in Andhra Pradesh. It is the tallest masonry dam in the World, constructed on the river Krishna. Srisailam Wildlife : The Srisailam Wildlife Sanctuary is situated around 132 kms south of Hyderabad on the banks of the river Krishna. The reserve is part of Project Tiger and supports a variety of animals birds and reptiles. The temple at Srisailam is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is considered as one of his twelve Jyotirlingas. A cluster of minor shrines within the temple enclosures include the Sahasra Linga Panchapandava Temples and Vata Vriksha. Mention of Srisailam as Sriparvata has been made in the immortal epic of the Hindus- the Mahabharat. |
