The city of Dibrugarh situated in the banks of River Brahmputra in Assam derives its name from 'Dibru' (Once a tributary of Brahmputra) and 'Garh' meaning fort.
Dibrugarh is the largest tea exporting town in India and the headquarters of Dibrugarh District in and is at the northern-most tip of the state. It has the world's largest Tea area and rightly earna the name of the 'Tea City of India'. It is a gateway to the three tea producing districts of Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, and Jorhat and also accounts for approximately 50% of India's tea crop. Dibrugarh is also addressed as the educational hub of Assam because of the presence of some of the finest educational institutes. Located alongside the River Brahmputra, it is sometimes referred to as the gateway to some of the districts like Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland.
Getting There:
By Air: Mohanbari happens to be the nearest airport located 13 kms from the heart of the town. Dibrugarh has regular air flights connecting it to important airports in the country like Delhi, Mumbai, Guwahati.
By Rail: Dibrugarh is linked to Guwahati by a broad gauge line and is also connected to other cities in India by express & superfast trains.
By Road: National Highway-37 links Dibrugarh and other important towns of Assam from where bus services are readily available at periodic intervals.
Prime Attractions
Amongst the many attractions, Namdhapa Tiger Park, the largest national park of Arunachal Pradesh and one of the largest wildlife protected area in India is 160 km away from Dibrugarh and spread over 1,985 sq km. Namdapha is also known as a Botanist?s dream. It's a bird sanctuary as well as a Tiger reserve. The four big cats namely: tiger, leopard, clouded leopard, and snow leopard can be easily found here. One can also see the rare white-winged wood duck and hoolock gibbon here.
