Assam City Guide

Dibrugarh district located in the North-Eastern state of Assam is also known as the Tea city of India as it contributes half of tea total production in India. Dibrugarh town is lying on the southern banks of Brahmaputra river and industries based on oil and timber forms an important share in the economic figures of Dibrugarh.
Dibrugarh is the headquarters of Dibrugarh District in Assam and is at the northern-most tip of the state. Situated on the banks of the River Brahmaputra, it is the gateway to the three tea producing districts of Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, and Jorhat. These three areas account for approximately 50% of India's Assam tea crop and this gives Dibrugarh its rightly earned name as the 'Tea city of India'. Dibrugarh is also the education hub of upper Assam. With Dibrugarh University, Assam Medical College and numerous other institutes of repute it is a major contributor to the education front in Assam. The historic John Berry White Medical School established in 1914 was the first centre for formal medical education in North East India.
The Tea Garden
There are numerous tea gardens situated all along the road to Dibrugarh. The soothing shades of green and smiling faces of the women working in the tea gardens are sure worth watching.
Digboi
Popularly known as the city of oil, Digboi is situated around 65 kms from Dibrugarh. It boasts of the oldest operational oil refinery of the world and also the oldest oil field of the world. Oil was found here in the late 19th century around 1880 and the first oil refinery Asia started working since 1900 and is still running. It is a city founded by the British and has a typical colonial impression on it with beautiful blue hills surrounding it. The common myth behind the name of the city is that the British would keep on saying the labourers Dig boy dig! This later culminated in the name of the town as Digboi!
National Oil Park
The National Oil Park in Digboi is worth a visit. While standing beside the world's oldest oil well, known as the discovery well, one can just be lucky to see herd of wild elephants or even the Royal Bengal Tiger.
War Cemetery
Another place to visit is the war cemetery. The most important event that took place in the history of Digboi other than the oil discovery is the near war with the Japanese during the world war -II. This war killed many an innocent and the cemetery sure fills ones eyes with mist remembering the unsung heroes.
