Beach Shacks are the charm of Goa’s Tourism and have significantly contributed to its development and growth, says Mr. Sebastian D' Souza, President of the All Goa Shack Owners Association (AGSOA). Beach shacks are not just any other business in Tourism - it is essentially a ‘Family Business’ epitomized by very ‘personalised service’ to the tourist. Shacks date back to the 60’s, when the backpack or “hippie” tourist discovered the pristine coast of Goa. In the absence of hotels, it was the fisherman’s family that catered to the culinary tastes of the tourists. Families along the beach also provided snacks and meals to Goans who spent their summer on the beach. Sebastian emphasized, that Goa is not just another tourist destination. Tourists keep coming back here, year after year and what brings them back is the fresh food, the laid back atmosphere, the beautiful beaches and the ‘family spirit’ that the local people provide.
These beach shacks have all the facilities like restaurant, beach beds, music, towels, umbrellas etc., The tourist like to spend the entire day on the beach and use the facilities provided by these beach huts. These shacks were in fact affecting the business of large hotels in Goa.
Each shack has its own style of music and there's always the Karaoke!
