Location : Rajkot is situated in the western Indian state of Gujarat in the Saurashtra region. The city extends from latitude 23?X32' in the North to longitude 70?X4' in the East. About Rajkot : Rajkot, the former Capital of the princely state of Saurashtra was founded by the Rajput Chief Kunwar Vibhuji in the 16th century, Rajkot is famous for its Bandhani Sarees, mirror-work, patch work, bead work and silk embroidery. By Air : Indian Airlines connects Rajkot with Bombay and Vayudoot connects Rajkot with Bombay and Kandla. By Rail : Rajkot is a junction on the Western Railway broad gauge line. It is connected through important trains all over the state. By Road : Rajkot is conveniently connected to other important cities of Gujrat. Its distance from other cities is; Bombay 798 km, Ahmedabad 218 km, Junagadh 98 km, Jamnagar 86 km, Dwarka 238 km, Porbandar 178 km, Bhavnagar 165 km. Tourist Attractions : Rajkumar College Established in 1870 , it was built for the education of the princess of Indian states. Earlier known as Alfred High School, it is a school with a checkered history. Established in 1853, for its standard of education, it became the most sought after school of the region. Gandhiji had his secondary education from this school. It has E shape building of one storey with Gothic Norman structure surrounded by an open playground on all the sides. Alfred School/Mohandas Gandhi Vidyalaya When Gandhiji's father shifted to Rajkot as Diwan of the local ruler, the young Gandhi was sent to Alfred School in the town, now known as Mohandas Gandhi Vidyalaya. The famous incident of Gandhi not copying the spelling of "kettle", despite his class teacher repeatedly prompting him to do so during the visit of a school inspector, took place here. Aji Dam It is situated 8 Kms. from Rajkot and supplies the towns water. Rashtriya Shala The Rashtriya Shala founded by Gandhi is also worth visiting. It is from here that Gandhi undertook his fast unto death during his Rajkot Satyagraha. It is now a centre of village industry. All these memorials are well preserved. Jagat Mandir Jagat Mandir is the beautiful carved temple of Shri Ramakrishna Paramhansa. Built of red stones, it is a replica of Belurmath. |
