Barog Travel Guide

Boarding and lodging at this charming post is offered at the top of the grand mountain by Himachal Tourism and other private enterprises. The belly of the mountain holds the longest railway tunnel on the Kalka-Shimla route-exactly 1143 m long. At the end of the tunnel is a quaint station of wooden proportions. This building has existed since 1903 when the line was opened and is built on a curvature. The wooden verandah running along the entire length of the lodge with its crisscrossing balustrade gives a feeling of immense space. The restaurant widows peep through a bevy of bush-rose creepers. A honeymoon cottage is a new addition.


Getting There:
By Road & Rail -
Barog lies on Shimla Kalka highway and regular buses and taxis ply from both of these places. Barog is also connected with both places by mountain train and the experience can be memorable.

Tourist Attractions:
Dagashai (7 km) :
A one time British contonenment. This is small town surrounded by pine trees. It has an old Church.

Solan (8 km) :
Located on the National High way-22 Solan derived its name from "Shoolini Devi" a local deity whose temple is situated in Solan Graon which is in existence since ancient time. Solan also remained capital of earstwhile Bhagat State for many years.

A famous 'Shoolini fair' is commemorated every year on State level in 2nd week of 'Asads' (June) at famous Thoda Ground. The town has various cultural and recreational centres besides temples and churches. There are beautiful Parks such as Children Park, Mohan park and Jawahar Park which have adequate arrangements for comfortable sitting and strolling. A mini zoo in the Park adds to the facination to the environment. Durga Club, Central State Library, Lower and Upper Bazar and Mall road are worth visiting. Ancient Durga Temple, Sanatan Dharm Mandir, Hari and Narsingh Mandir are also quite famous.

Solan Brewary (11km) :
This is in existence since 1855 AD. Formerly Dyer Meaking Breway is not only known in the country but also in foreign countries for its products.

Jatoli (15 km) :
7 km from Solan this small but beautiful village on Solan-Rajgarh road is famous for Vishal Shiva Temple.

Renuka:
The largest lake in the state of Himachal Pradesh that is said to embody Goddess Renuka, the mother of Parshurama.

Rajgarh:
A pleasant area, dotted with several orchards and delightful picnic spots such as Habban and Nacchna

Kasauli
Built by the Britishers in 19th century, Kasauli is a small, beautiful hill station of Himachal Pradesh covered with pine forests, orchards and high hills of Indian Himalayas. Every year large number of tourist travel to this beautiful destination of Himachal Pradesh to indulge in the adventure activities organized by the travel and tourism department of the state.

Mandi
Situated on the banks of river Beas, Mandi is the historic town of Himachal Pradesh famous for the century old temples and beautiful carvings.Described as the 'Varanasi of the Hills' Mandi houses ruins of old palaces, notable for their colonial architecture and pattern.

Paonta Sahib
Situated amidst lush green forests of Sal trees, the city of Paonta Sahib is a famous pilgrim center for the Sikh as well as Hindu community. A famous Paonta Sahib Gurudwara is located in the vicinity of Paonta sahib, dedicated to Guru Gobind Singh (10th Guru of Sikh). Apart from the Gurudwara, Paonta Sahib also houses a famous temple, dedicated to goddesses Yamuna and is located on the bank of river Yamuna.

Renuka Lake
Located at a distance of 37 km from Nahan and 60 km from Paonta Sahib, Renuka Lake is considered as one of the largest lakes in Himachal Pradesh. Situated amidst lush green forests of Indian Himalayas, the surroundings of the Lake offers an excellent venue to tourists for the adventure sports.

Bilaspur
Bilaspur, which is located on the bank of Gobindsagar lake is easily accessible through the Chandigarh - Manali national highway no 21. A newly established town of Himachal Pradesh, Bilaspur presents itself as a blend of traditional and modern lifestyle.
