Kasauli Travel Guide


Kasauli is a small, beautiful hill station of Himachal Pradesh located at a distance of 77 kms from Shimla. Built in 19th century by Britishers, the city has its own charm and beauty. Covered by the beautiful pine forests, orchards and high hills, Kasauli is described as the picturesque hill-station of Northern India.

It is also believed that during the 17th century, some Rajput (sort of clan) Families from Rewari (in Haryana) took refuge in the lower Himalayas and finally settled down at a village called Kasaul from where the name Kasauli originated. In the present scenario, the city of Kasauli attracts huge number of tourists for the lovely scenic view of the hills and forests. Apart from the natural beauty, the city is also known for the oldest research institute called Central Research Institute, established in the year 1900, taking care of pets. The famous upper and lower malls of Kasauli provide an excellent long walks through mixed forests of pine, oak and huge horse-chestnut trees that encircles the entire Kasauli town. Travel department of Himachal Pradesh organizes tour to Kasauli in the month of April- June and September-November.
How To Reach
Air
Nearest airport is at Chandigarh (65 km) and Shimla (73 km) from Kasauli. Major domestic airlines fly between Delhi and Chandigarh. Tourist can take taxi or bus to reach Kasauli.

Rail
Prain route is the best way to reach Kasauli as it passes through lush green forests and mountain ranges. The nearest railhead is at Kalka, 37 km away, from where one can take taxi, which takes an hour to reach Kasauli.
Road
Kasauli is 315 Kms away from Delhi and tourist can cover this distance with the help of state transport buses or private taxis. These transports are easily available for Kasauli from Delhi, Chandigarh, Kalka and Shimla.

Internal Transport
Travelling inside the city is convenient and comfortable. There are taxis, autos and buses, which are readily available from all the major intersections of the city.

Accommodations
Kasauli is full of resorts, hotels and lodges that makes comfortable stay in the city. There is PWD rest house, and HPTDC run hotel that requires prior booking. Apart from these options there are star categories and budget hotels also.

Places of Interest
Monkey Point
Monkey point is the highest point, located at a distance of 4 km from Kasauli bus stand. The point gives panoramic view of the plains of Chandigarh and the river Satluj. A spectular view of the Chandigarh city can have had on stary and clear night. Apart from the natural beauty the point is also a famous for the Lord Hanuman (Hindu Deity) temple.

Sanawar
Famous for the Lawrence school, Sanawar is located at a distance of 6 km from Kasauli. The school is hundred years old, started by Sir Henry Lawrence. Tourists also get attracted to the famous Nahara Devi temple and beautiful waterfall that can be reached by a small walk through natural beauty of the Sanawar.

Baba Balak Nath Temple
A famous temple, Baba Balak Nath is located at a distance of 3 km from Kasauli on the top of Garner hill. The temple is build in the memory of Baba Balak Nath by the local resident named Vijay Kumar. It is believed that a issue less couple gets blessed by making a trip to this famous temple.

Dharampur (15 km)
Dharampur is located on the national highway no. 22. Situated amidst healthy atmosphere of fragrant pines, Dharampur is famous for the hospital that cure tuberculosis.

Dagshai ( 19 km)
Dagshai is a small cantonment situated at a height of 1925 m above the sea level. Dagshai comprises of many military public school and barracks.

Bilaspur
Bilaspur is one of the excursion sites available near Kasauli, which is known for the forts, temples and dams. Apart from the historical monuments, tourists travel to Bilaspur for adventure sports like para-gliding and water rafting.

Barog
One of the picturesque valley, Barog is famous for the mountain ranges that is covered by the long pine trees. Situated on the Kalka-Shimla highway, Barog is a famous excursion sites located nearby Kasauli. Barog is known for the Choor Chandni or Choordhar peak which is also described as 'Mountain of silver bangle' that looks amazing in the moonlight.

Mandi
Situated on the banks of river Beas, Mandi is the historic town of Himachal Pradesh famous for the 81 old stone temples adorned with beautiful carvings. Mandi is also termed as the 'Varanasi of the Hills' , housing the remains of old palaces, much notable for their colonial architecture.

Kufri
A scenic destination of Himachal Pradesh, Kufri is located at a distance of 13 km from Shimla. A large number of tourists throng to Kufri to participate in the annual winter sports festival organized every year in the month of February.

Shopping In Kasauli
Shopping in Kasauli will not be very enjoyable as there are not much to shop for. But, still tourists can go for woollen items and gift items( made of wood).
