Una Travel Guide
Situated in the south western part of Himachal Pradesh, Una has been bifurcated from Hoshiarpur district of Punjab in 1966. Surrounded by the banks of river Sutlej and Beas, the city of Una share borders with Kangra valley, Hamirpur and Bilaspur. In the present scenario, Una is considered as one of the literate cities of Himachal Pradesh with the literacy rate of 81.9%. Famous for the temples, dams and fairs Una attracts large number of tourists from all over the country. Especially during the month of February/March a large number tourists travel to Una to witness the famous Baba Bharbhag Singh fair, which is celebrated in the memory of Bharbhag Singh, a saint known for his magical power. Besides that tourists can visit the nearby market place called Jeevan market, from where famous woollen shawls and carpets can be purchased. How to Reach Air The nearest airport is at Chandigarh, which is 120 km away from Shimla that connects Una to all the major cities of Himachal Pradesh and India. From the airport, tourists can hire private taxi to reach Una city. Generally rates are fixed by the taxi union of the local region but still one can go for bargaining. Rail The nearest railway station is at Una, Tourists can hire private taxi or ride shared autos that frequently run between station and Una city. Road Una is well connected by road to major cities of Himachal Pradesh and India. State transport runs their deluxe as well as semi-deluxe buses from Shimla, Chandigarh and Pathankot to Una covering the distance of 240 km via Una - Chandigarh - Shimla. From the capital city of India, Delhi, Una is 375 km away. Internal Transport Autos and Taxis are available for the tourists to commute inside the city. Rates are generally fixed by the taxi union and does not require enough bargaining. Accommodation Being a hill station of Himachal Pradesh, Una has got numerous staying facilities. From the state owned heritage hotels to five star luxury hotels. Tourists are guaranteed for the state of the art services and facilities. Places of Interest Dera Baba Bharbhag Singh (40 km) Famous for the Baba Bharbhag Singh fair, this place has Gurudwara which is travelled by huge number of Sikh pilgrim. Baba Bharbhag, who was a saint established this famous Gurudwara which was earlier known as Dera. Chintpurni Temple (75 km) Located on the Dharamsala - Hoshiarpur road, the Chintpurni temple is dedicated to 'Bhagwati Chinmastika' or Goddess 'Chintpurni' who grants all wishes. Hundreds and thousands of devotees travel to this holy place of Una to attend 10 days long fair, which is celebrated during the month of August to mark the presence of Goddess 'Chintpurni'. Bangana-Lathian-Piplu Located on the Una - Barsar - Hamirpur road, Bangana - Lathian - Piplu gives an excellent view of the Gobind-Sagar Dam, which is famous among the 'Sikh' pilgrim. Especially during the winter season, this area attracts huge number of tourists who also visit to Naina Devi temple ( a famous Hindu pilgrimage center). Excursion From Una Kangra (105 Km) Kangra is a small town of Himachal Pradesh located amidst lush green forests, gushing rivers and century old temples. A huge number of tourists travel to Kangra to witness the miniature paintings preserved in the famous Kangra fort. The valley of Kangra also offers an excellent turf for the the mountaineering, trekking, fishing and rock climbing. River Beas and Pong Dam are two most important sites for angling in Kangra valley. Bilaspur (120 km Una-Kiratpur-Bilaspur) Located on the bank of Sutlej river, Bilaspur is considered as a planned hill station of the India. Bilaspur offers cool and enchanting atmosphere for the hand-gliding over the Sutlej river from Rampur to Bilaspur. Gobind Sagar Dam in Bilaspur also offers a variety of water sports activities but these activities can be done during half of the year between August and January. Dharamsala (117 km Una) Dharamsala is a beautiful town of Himachal Pradesh. Set against thickly populated forests of pine, Dharamsala is situated at a height of 1250 m above sea level. Dharamsala is famous for the monasteries, colonial style churches and cottages. St.John Church is the famous one adorned with beautiful stained glass windows. McLeodganj, which is a famous Buddhists pilgrimage center is located on the lower end of Dharamsala. Famous for the Tibetan arts and culture, McLeodganj is also known for the residence of Dalai Lama, living deity of Lamas. Mandi Situated on the bank of river Beas, Mandi is described as a hill station full of temples. It is often called as 'Varanasi of the hills'. Once an important commercial center of Himachal Pradesh, Mandi now emerged as fast developing town that comprises of century old temples and palaces. Major Attraction Of The City Fairs & Festivals Una is known for the fairs and festivals, which is organized from time to time in the year. Hola Mohalla fair, Sawan Ashtmi fair, Baisakhi festival are some of the important fairs and festivals of Una. Besides that Baba Bharbhag Singh Fair is one of the interesting and famous fair organized in the month of February in the memory of Baba Bharbhag who was known for his magical powers. The fair is famous for the treatment of mental problems. Shopping In Una Jeevan market in Una is a famous place for shopping all sorts of arts and handicrafts works. Especially the woollen products are on display and tourists can buy carpets, caps, jackets and expensive Pashmina shawls from the state owned government shops. |
