In the Periyar forest of Thekkady is one of the finest wildlife reserves in India, and spread across the entire district are picturesque plantations and hill towns that hold great opportunities for treks and mountain walks

The Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary
One of the most beautiful wildlife sanctuaries of the world, Periyar wildlife sanctuary is a favorite haunt of the thousands of wildlife lover tourists in India. The fresh air of the moist deciduous forest gives one a chance to experience the peace and serenity and long to return for more. Major wildlife attraction of Periyar Sanctuary are the Tigers and the Asiatic Elephants. There are more than 40 Tigers in this park, as the park comes under Project Tiger. Other animals to be seen in the Periyar are Gaur, Wild Pigs, Sambar, Barking Deer, Mouse Deer, Dole, Lion-tailed Macaque, Nilgiri Langur, Bonnet Macaque and Nilgiri Tahr.
Mangala Devi Temple
The beautiful temple, built in traditional Kerala style architecture is 15 Km from Thekkady. It lies 1337 m above sea level and is hidden in the lush green hilltop. The temple is open to the visitors only on the festival of Chaitra Purnima. Necessary permits have to be taken from the forest department to see the temple on a normal day.
Peermede
Peermede used to be the summer home of the royal family of Travancore. Wide vistas of tea, cardamom, rubber and coffee plantations interspersed with silver cascades, sculptural rocks, meadows and mist-cloaked hilltops make Peermede an unforgettable experience.
