About Mumbai : On the west coast of India, the teeming metropolis Mumbai formerly known as Bombay, the capital of the Maharashtra is the biggest business center deriving its name from the patron goddess of the Koli fisher folk Mumbadevi. Being a major financial center, with people coming from all over the world has made Mumbai a major International city By Air : Mumbai has separate international and domestic airports The Sahar International airport is well connected by a number of foreign airlines. All domestic airlines fly in and out of the domestic Santa Cruz Airport. Nariman Point, the heart of the commercial district, is about an hour away from the airports. Traffic permitting. By Rail : Mumbai is the headquarters of the Central and Western Railways. Regular trains connect it with all major cities like Ahmedabad, Aurangabad, Bangalore, Bhopal, Calcutta, Delhi, Goa, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Madras, Nagpur and Trivandrum. By Road : Mumbai is well connected by buses to the north, south and east of the country. Tourist Attractions : Gateway Of India : Gateway of India is the most famous colonial landmark of Mumbai. It was built to commemorate the visit of King George V and Queen Mary to India in 1911 and was officially opened in 1924. Designed by the English architect Wittet, the gateway consists of a central hall with great archways, and side halls, which can accommodate 600 people. Taraporewala Aquarium : Open daily except on Mondays, Taraporewala Aquarium is located on the Marine Drive. It has a good collection of sea and fresh water fish and other marine life. Hanging Gardens And Kamala Nehru Park On Malabar Hill : The hanging gardens are built over a reservoir. From the Kamala Nehru Park, located opposite the gardens, one can get a panoramic view of the charming Marine Drive. The twinkling lights of Marine Drive in the night have been appropriately described as "the Queen's Necklace." Haji Ali's Tomb is a 500-year old Muslim shrine. Built on a rocky prominence surrounded by the sea, it can be reached by a long causeway. Prince of Wales Museum : One of the greatest attractions of Mumbai, the Prince of Wales Museum is a perfect example of the Indo-Saracenic style of architecture. The museum houses different sections such as those of natural history, art and archaeology, besides smaller sections devoted to other specific subjects. It is open on all days except Mondays. |
