Information
Thane is a district located on the North-East of Mumbai city in the
Indian state of Maharashtra. Thane is famous as a city from where the
first railway line was initiated covering the stations from Bombay
Victoria Terminus to Thane. The growing amenities and development of
real estate has made Thane, a key suburb of Mumbai city. As a traveler's
delight Thane has handful options of serene and exotic places which sees
good turn over of the visitors from India and abroad. The establishments
of big industries ranging from chemicals, engineering, textiles,
softwares and electronics places Thane as one of the leading economic
zones in India.
Thane, which means 'station' in Marathi was also known as Sthanaka, the
capital of the Shilahara kings. Many travellers, including Venetian
explorer Marco Polo, described the bustling trade at its well-developed
port, and the cultural diversity of its people. Historically Thane has
been ruled by the Portuguese, Marathas and the British. The city is
bounded by the Parsik hills and Yeour hills on the east and west. The
region features all types of landforms, from the Jawahar Mokhade plateau
to the Sahyadri ranges, and coastal plains and river basins.
There are several historical buildings, including a fort and several
churches. Thane city is also the district headquarters of Thane
district.
Food Fiesta
To taste the true local flavor, go for a mouthwatering Mumbai’s vada pav
or samosa pav at any of the roadside stalls at Ram Maruti Road. If you
are a chaat lover go to Tip-Top, a local fast food joint serving a
delicious assortment of various chaats. For a South Indian meal, hit
Woodland. Oriental Spice is a nice Chinese restaurant, while The Grill
is famous for its sizzlers. Pure vegetarian meals can be ordered at The
Challenge. Other international chains are also present in Thane like
McDonalds, Pizza Hut and Dominos. Of course, don’t forget to sample the
mouth-watering Malvani dishes. They are best available at Hotel
Vijaydurg. Their specialties include delicious and spicy prawns, crabs,
shell masala, malvani thali with fried pomphret and bombil. Solkadi, a
kokum drink taken after food is also a must.
