Kohima Travel Guide
Kohima, the capital of the state of Nagaland, is perched at 1444.12
meters above sea level. Kohima enjoys a temparature climate throughout
the year. It is a hill stationon its own right and has its incomparable
charms that other hill stations do not offer. Kohima is the
cosmopolitian headquarters of 15 major tribes. The distinctive character
and identity of each tribe in terms of traditions, custom, language and
dress is clearly discernible to a visitor. Many are visibly amazed by
this contrast.
Situated in the southwest part of the northeastern state of Nagaland,
Kohima is a hill station perched at an altitude of 1500 meters above sea
level. This capital town is at a distance of 339 km from Guwahati, 145
km from Imphal and 74 km from Dimapur. The National Highway 39 connects
it to both Dimapur and Imphal. It experiences around 250 cm of annual
rainfall. While summers are tropical, winters are dry and bitterly cold.

By Rail :
Dimapur ( 74 kms ), the nearest railhead, is on the North-East Frontier
Railway and is directly connected to Guwahati which in turn is directly
connected to all the majore places in India. Trains between Guwahati &

Nagaland State Transport runs buses from Dimapur, (Transport Bus Stand,
Tel : 2094) to Kohima from 05.30 A.M. till evening. Fare Rs.20 to 40/-.

luxury buses connecting all the State Capitals of North-Eastern region
Tourist Attractions:
Nagaland State Museum
The State Museum in Kohima treasures a rare collection of articles of
different tribes which speak about the history and traditions of the
Nagas.
Sales Emporium
Located in the heart of Kohima, the emporium sells a variety of Naga
art and handicraft items.
Zoological Park
The zoo in Kohima has some rare species of animals and birds, including
the rare Blythe's Tragopan.
Intangki Wildlife Sanctuary
Located at a distance of 37 km from Dimapur, this sanctuary has some
rare species of birds.
Khonoma
Around 10 kms from Kohima, lies the village of Khonoma, that is steeped
in tales of valour and gallantry. The Khonoma gate relates the story of
British infiltration into Naga Hills.
Dzukou Valley
Situated at an altitude of 2,438 m, it is 30 km to the south of Kohima.
Lilies in white and yellow and a hundred of other flowers in varied
colours adorn the valley. This is one of the best trekking spots in the
north-eastern region.
Japfu Peak
Located at an altitude of 3,048 m above sea level is the second highest
peak in Kohima, Japfu Peak. Apart from providing a fabulous view of
Kohima, Japfu is also ideal for trekking and scaling.
Mokokchung and Zunheboto
Mokokchung and Zunheboto, located 160 and 150 kms respectively from
Kohima, are picturesque towns, worth a visit. Mokokchung is a major
cultural centre of the Ao Nagas.
