The early history of the Patiala state is considered more of a myth than fact. Baba Ala Singh, a man with vision and courage assumed the leadership in 1714 and carved out an independent principality from a petty Zamindari of 30 villages.
Patiala is a city of palaces, museums, gardens and is also a consumer goods emporium. A place known to be clean, green and beautiful, Patiala is well maintained and is always a treat to the eyes. Amongst the major religious sites in Patiala, Gurudwara Dukhiniwaran and Kali Temple hold importance. The Mall Road in Patiala is a nice place to take a leisurely stroll. Famous Things in Patiala
Punjabi shoes, golden and silver, shoes embroidered in several patterns and colours to match dresses, silver and gold embroidered "naaras" (or pyjama strings), parandhas (women weave them at the end of their plaits or braids) of varied shapes and designs but uniformly beautiful hand-woven head coverings. Phulkaris which can only be described as embroidered epics and its vegetarian and non- vegetarian royal cuisine are famous.
