Mathura Temples
The Temple City The birth place of lord Krishna, Mathura, has always been regarded as one of the most holy places in India. The small town of Mathura has numerous temples, mostly dedicated to Krishna or his contemporaries. An ancient habitation, Mathura's strategic location ensured its position as a center of trade and a meeting point of cultures. Mathura used to be a major city during the time of the Buddha (5th century BC) as it became the eastern capital of the Kushan emperor Kanishka. Mathura continued to be a center of power during the enlightened rule of emperor Ashoka and up to the Gupta era. The temples are mostly designed in classical North India stye of temple architecture. These temples attained a global fame during the Hippy and ISKCON movements of 1970s. Krishna Janmbhoomi The birth site of lord Krishna, it is also a disputed land due to its closeness to a mosque. There is a old prison at the basement of the temple, which is said to be the same prison where Krishna took birth. The temple complex was heavily destructed by Aurangzeb and a mosque was constructed at the site. Dwarkadhish Temple The Dwarkadhish Temple was built in early 19th century. The temple is the main centre of celebrations during festivals and fairs. The temple is heavily decorated during any festival celebrations. Rangji Temple This South Indian style temple was built in the year 1851, and is dedicated to Lord Sri Ranganatha - a form of Lord Vishnu lying down on the Sesha-Naga (celestial serpent). This temple has a traditional South Indian gopuram (gateway) and is surrounded by high walls. Once a year a grand car festival (Ratha Yatra) is held known as Brahmotsava, during the months of March - April and lasts for 10 days. Radha Madanmohana Temple This famous temple was established by Srila Sanatana Gosvami and is amongst the oldest temples of the area. The original Deity of Madana-mohana was taken to Karauli in Rajasthan for safety during the attack by the soldiers of the Emperor Aurangzeb. Reaching the Temples Mathura streets are very narrow lanes. The best way to watch the temples, is the to take the cab till the main city and then take a walk in the lanes on Mathura. |
