Mathura City Guide

The city of Mathura, in Uttar Pradesh, the nucleus of Brajbhoomi, is located at a distance of 145 km south-east of Delhi and 58 km north-west of Agra. The city is better known for being birth place of Krishna.
Mathura, the holy city devoted to Krishna, is the same place where Krishna was born. Legends say that Kansa, the evil brother of Krishna's mother, vowed to kill Krishna at birth. To secure him, Krishna's father shifted Krishna to Vrindavan as soon as he was born. Mathura without Lord Krishna is like Bethlehem without Christ. The site of Krishna's birth is still preserved and is visited by thousands every year.
A long stretch of beautiful ghats - with their steps leading to the water's edge, arched gateways and temple spires extending along the right bank of the River Yamuna, enhances the sacred character of the town of Mathura. You can also visit The Archeological Museum at Mathura. It hosts an outstanding antique collection of statuettes belonging to the Mathura school of art. The Vishram Ghat, on the banks of river Yamuna, is another place worth a visit on your Mathura tour. It is believed that Lord Krishna killed Kansa here. The Kans Qila, Sati Burj, Dwarkadheesh temple, Gita Mandir and Jama Masjid are some other tourist attractions in Mathura.
It is best to visit this place during winter, in the months of October to March. However, make adequate arrangements for a comfortable journey if you are traveling at some other time.
