Roorkee is the gateway to pilgrim centres of Haridwar, Rishikesh, Badrinath and Kedarnath and tourist attractions of Dehradun and Mussoorie. Roorkee is home to Indian Institute of Technology.
Roorkee is located within the Haridwar district in the state of Uttarakhand. It is located on the banks of the Ganges canal with a population of about 140,000 inhabitants. Roorkee is about 180 km north of the Indian capital New Delhi and located between the rivers Ganga and Yamuna. Before the creation of Uttarakhand (formerly known as Uttaranchal), Roorkee was a part of the state of Uttar Pradesh. Roorkee is also Famous for a World Famous Shrine Situated in Kaliyar town on famous Sufi Saint Sarkar Sabir Pak. Roorkee is situated in the foothills of Himalayas and close to the cities of Haridwar, Rishikesh, Deoband, Saharanpur, Muzaffarnagar and Uttarakhand. Roorkee is also a well known center of education. With the numerous schools, places for higher education and professional degrees, students come from various places from all over India and abroad.
What to See in Roorkee
Dargah : Visit the famous dargah of the 13th century Sufi saint, Alauddin Sabir Kaliyari at Piran Kaliyar. Urs is celebrated at this dargah annually.
Sidheshwar Shiv Mandir : Not to miss the 150 years old Sidheshwar Shiv Mandir, considered sacred by the local people.
Mai Ji Mandir : Built in 1870, the Mai Ji Mandir is known to have been constructed by a sanyasini who got the land as donation from the Rajput chieftains.
