Once the capital of the Pandya kings, the historic city of Thirunelveli has always enjoyed a prominence in the political front of Tamil Nadu. Thirunelveli became one of the most prominent seats of politics during the reigns of the Chola kingdom and of the Vijayanagar Empire, before being associated to the territory of the Nawab of Arcot who later grant it to the dominance of the British.

The major tourist attractions of a tour to Thirunelveli include the Nellaiappar Temple, a twin temple dedicated to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, the beautiful temple of Nellaiappar is one of the most revered temples of Tamil Nadu. The important places of tourist interest located around Thirunelveli are:
Ettayapuram (72 Kms) - Birthplace of the famous regional poet Subramanya Bharathy, who brought about sparks of revolution with his brilliant works, this is also the site of the Umaru Pulavar Dhansha.

Krishnapuram (13 Kms) - An impressive temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu, this temple is home to one of the most respected deities of Tamil Nadu, Lord Thiruvenkatanathar.

Sankaran Koil (56 Kms) - Sankaran is famous for the Chariot Festival in Adithabasu Vizha that is celebrated in the month of July. Lacs of people flock to this place on this occasion.

Kutrallam - Kutrallam, which is popularly called the "Spa of the south", is situated at an elevation of about 170 m high, on the Western Ghats. This is not only a tourist spot but also a health resort. The waterfall has medicinal properties to cure physical ailments.

Kalakadu Wildlife Sanctuary - This sanctuary is very popular with botanists and ornithologists as it has a great variety of fauna and bird life. Among the animals that roam here are tiger, panther, jackal and wild dogs while reptile population includes cobra, python and several other snakes.

Kunthakulam Bird Sanctury (33 Kms) - Kunthakulam is actually a small and natural scenic village. This village is covered with natural forest and ponds. During winter every year more than 10 thousand birds from various countries like Pakistan, Myanmar, Sri Lanka and Australia migrate here.

Best Time To Visit
The climate of Thirunelveli is a typically tropical one with hot and humid summers and mild winters. The summers during the months of March to September see an average temperature of around 38 C while mild winters with an average temperature of 32 C can be observed during the months of October to February. This would definitely constitute the best time to plan a tour to Thirunelveli.
