Rail Budget Updates

Announced on 3rd July, 2009

In her trademark simplicity, the new Railway Minister Ms Mamta Banerjee arrived at the gates of the Parliament in her Maruti Zen car rather than the official vehicle alloted to her. In another first Ms Banerjee broke away from the 'Briefcase' tradition and carried the budget papers in a jhola (cloth bag).

Rail Budget 2009-10 captures some of the highlights from the Budget speech made by Ms. Mamta Banerjee, the Union Railway Minister of India. She has outlined improvement areas such as cleanliness, quality of railway catering, safety and security, passenger amenities and punctuality.

Noticeable highlights from Rail Budget 2009-10 include:

  • - 50 World Class Stations to be developed
  • - 12 Non-Stop Trains on select routes to be introduced
  • - Doctors on board in long-distance trains
  • - Women RPF squads to be deployed for protection of women passengers
  • - Staff welfare schemes to be enhanced
