The Historic Institution

The legendary Banaras Hindu University is one of the oldest educational institution in India. Founded in 1917, by late Madan Mohan Malviya, the university has a history of providing world class education. The mission behind the university was to provide world class education to Indian and foreign students by the way of Hindu system of teaching. The university is unique in many aspects. Banaras Hindu University is among the top 3 largest residential universities in the world having more than 128 independent teaching departments.

The icon of Banaras Hindu University is associated more with National struggle for independence and gaining self-reliance in terms of Education. It is known as the Oxford of the East. The university is spread in an area of more than 2000 acres. The campus is very artistically designed. The university is built in shape of rising sun, which is believed to be provider of light, hope and energy. The Banaras Hindu University provides education in many disciplines, which includes science, commerce, medical, agriculture, management, engineering, law and many others. The central library here was once the largest libraries of India. Whole area in the university is covered wth greenery, which can make anyone feel in the lap of nature.

Main Attractions

New Vishwanath Temple:

Also called Birla temple, the New Vishwanath Temple is an absolute delight to eyes. Built in white marbles, the temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The double storeyed temple has a Shiva-linga on the ground floor, and an idol of Shiva on forst floor. Carvings of Geeta texts are marked on the marble inside the temple. It is one of the prime attractions in Varanasi.

Bharat Kala Bhawan :

It is a museum, located in centre of the university. The museum has a vast collections of miniature paintings, sculptures from first to fifteenth centuries, old photographs of Varanasi and brocade textiles.

Central Library :

The Central Library here has a collection of more than 13 lakh volumes. The library is designed to facilitate the student in finding the books. There are sections devoted to books, subjects and types of publications. The double storeyed building looks like a classical monument. The construction of library begun in 1921. It is currently the largest university maintained university of India.

How to Reach

Banaras Hindu University is 10 Km from Varanasi railway station. One can take Auto-rickshaws, taxis or Hand-rickshaws to reach B.H.U. from any part of city.
