Akshay Kumar Biography

Akshay Kumar (born Rajiv Hari Om Bhatia on September 9, 1967) is an Indian actor and film producer who works in Hindi cinema. In over 30 years of acting, Kumar has appeared in over 100 films and has won several awards, including two National Film Awards and two Filmfare Awards. He received the Padma Shri, India's fourth-highest civilian honour, from the Government of India in 2009. Kumar is one of the most prolific actors in Indian cinema.

Early life and background

Kumar was born in Old Delhi in Delhi, India, to Hari Om Bhatia (later Brijmohan Bhatia) and Aruna Bhatia in a Punjabi Hindu family. His father was an army officer. From a young age, Kumar was very interested in sports. His father too enjoyed wrestling. He lived and grew up in Delhi's Chandni Chowk and later he moved to Bombay (present-day Mumbai) when his father left Army to become an accountant with UNICEF. Soon, his sister was born and the family lived in Koliwada, a Punjabi dominated area of Central Bombay.

Career

Kumar began his career as a model in the early 1990s. He made his acting debut in the 1991 film Saugandh, which was a commercial failure. However, his breakthrough came in 1992 with the film Khiladi, which was a box office success. Kumar quickly established himself as one of the leading action stars in Bollywood, appearing in films such as Main Khiladi Tu Anari (1994), Mohra (1994), and Tu Chor Main Sipahi (1996).

In the late 1990s, Kumar began to diversify his roles, appearing in romantic comedies such as Yeh Dillagi (1994), Dhadkan (2000), and Mujhse Shaadi Karogi (2004). He also starred in critically acclaimed films such as Dil To Pagal Hai (1997) and Taal (1999).

In the 2000s, Kumar continued to star in a variety of films, including action comedies, romantic comedies, dramas, and thrillers. Some of his most notable films from this decade include Hera Pheri (2000), Garam Masala (2005), Namastey London (2007), Singh Is Kinng (2008), and Housefull (2010).

In the 2010s, Kumar starred in a number of successful films, including Rowdy Rathore (2012), Khiladi 786 (2012), Special 26 (2013), Holiday (2014), Baby (2015), Airlift (2016), Rustom (2016), Jolly LLB 2 (2017), Toilet: Ek Prem Katha (2017), Pad Man (2018), Gold (2018), 2.0 (2018), Kesari (2019), Mission Mangal (2019), Good Newwz (2019), Sooryavanshi (2021), and Bachchan Pandey (2022).

Personal life

Kumar married actress Twinkle Khanna, daughter of famous actor Rajesh Khanna and Dimple Kapadia, on January 17, 2001. They have two children: a son named Aarav and a daughter named Nitara.
