Ashwin made his debut for Tamil Nadu in 2006-07 and took 31 wickets. The 23-year-old has 103 wickets in domestic cricket and also has two hundreds to his credit. His big break came when he was chosen for the Chennai Super Kings squad in the inaugural Indian Premier League. Ashwin's consistent show in the domestic scene earned him a Grade D contract. Tamil Nadu won the Indian domestic one-day championship in 2009 under Ashwin's captaincy. He became the highest wicket taker of the 2010 Champions League Twenty20 tournament for Chennai Super Kings in the tournament with 13 wickets and was adjudged as the player of the tournament and also got the Golden Wicket.

After having made it to the ODI team in early 2010, Ashwin didn't play but with his exploits in IPL 3, he was awarded another chance and responded with a quick-fire 38 on debut against Sri Lanka. He also outshone Muralidaran in the 2010 T20 Champions League.
