Chris Woakes

Christopher Roger Woakes (born 2 March 1989) is an English cricketer who plays internationally for England in all formats. In domestic cricket, he represents Warwickshire, and has played in multiple Twenty20 leagues, including for Kolkata Knight Riders, Royal Challengers Bangalore and Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League.

Woakes is a right-handed all-rounder, bowling fast medium. He is known for his consistency, both with the bat and ball, and is often described as a "workhorse". He is also a very good fielder, and is particularly adept at taking catches in the deep

Early Life and Family

Woakes was born in Birmingham, West Midlands, England. He started playing cricket at a young age, and was quickly identified as a talented player. He attended King Edward VI Sutton Coldfield Grammar School, where he played cricket for the school team.

Woakes' father, Roger Woakes, was also a cricketer, and played for Warwickshire and England. His mother, Lynn Woakes, is a nurse. Woakes has two younger brothers, Ben and Sam, who are also cricketers.

Early Cricket Career

Woakes made his first-class debut for Warwickshire in 2006, at the age of 17. He quickly established himself as a regular member of the team, and in 2009 he helped Warwickshire to win the County Championship.

In 2011, Woakes made his debut for England in the Twenty20 International (T20I) format. He made his One Day International (ODI) debut just a few weeks later.

International Debut

Woakes made his international debut in the T20I format against Australia in January 2011. He made his ODI debut against the same opposition a few weeks later.

Woakes made his Test debut against South Africa in December 2013. He took a five-wicket haul on debut, and helped England to win the match.

ODI Career

Woakes has played 114 ODIs for England, taking 139 wickets and scoring 1393 runs. He has a best bowling figure of 6/45, and a best batting score of 96*.

Woakes was a key member of the England team that won the 2019 Cricket World Cup. He took 17 wickets in the tournament, and was named the Player of the Match in the final against New Zealand.

T20I Career

Woakes has played 29 T20Is for England, taking 30 wickets and scoring 140 runs. He has a best bowling figure of 4/15, and a best batting score of 36.

Woakes was a member of the England team that won the 2022 T20 World Cup. He took 13 wickets in the tournament, and was named the Player of the Match in the semi-final against India.

Test Career

Woakes has played 48 Tests for England, taking 175 wickets and scoring 1754 runs. He has a best bowling figure of 6/33, and a best batting score of 137*.

Woakes is one of the most consistent bowlers in English Test cricket. He has a knack of taking wickets at crucial moments, and is also a very good fielder.

  • Woakes is the only player to have won the Cricket World Cup and the T20 World Cup.
